My stomach was bothering me this morning, so I called in sick today. Spent most of the day watching discs 1 through 3 of Firefly.

How did I miss this show when it was on?

I love it!

I love everything about it, from the theme song (Joss has come a long way from "Once More With Feeling") to Inara's wardrobe to Zoe and Wash's marriage. I just need to watch disc 4 and get the Serenity movie and I'll be an expert on all things Fireflyian ... Fireflyish ... whatever.

I just have one question for any fellow fans out there:

What's with all the Chinese dialogue and written characters?

My understanding is that when the great diaspora happened from Earth, China and the United States were dominant. When humanity scattered, it melded elements of both to form the prevailing culture. It makes the culture seem (to me, at least) more organic and real.

Plus, if they swear in Chinese they can get it past the censors! ;)

I think you're right.

Good point. I just wish I knew what they're saying.

"The Alliance" is actually a diminutive. Its full title is "The Anglo-Sino Alliance." The assumption is that the Chinese and American cultures were the most advanced when humanity left Earth and cooperated on the efforts. You see flavors of Chinese culture all over the series, in more than just the language, customs, clothing, decor.

I'll have to watch the show again to find the other Chinese stuff. It's cool that Joss put so much thought into the show's history.
