Ars Amatoria

Ars Amatoria
Ave Maria Gratia Plena, reviewed 6-23-08
Rosewood with Sicilian lemon peel, red Mysore sandalwood, pale musks, sweet mountain sage and a dusting of lily, night-blooming jasmine and orris.

On me, Ave Maria Gratia Plena is mostly lemon with lily and jasmine over musk. It's nice but it's not what I'm looking for.

Bathsheba, reviewed 9-01-07
Carnation, sensual plum, and Arabian musk.

In the imp, I smell mostly the musk and carnation. Bathsheba smells the same wet on my skin. The two notes work together beautifully. Dry on my skin, the plum starts to come through. As lovely as Bathsheba is, I won't get a bottle, but I'll always have an imp on hand.

Bordello, reviewed 4-08-08
Bawdy plum with amaretto, burgundy wine and black currant.

On me, Bordello is a juicy, sugary plum over booze. It's definitely a cousin to Midwinter's Eve. I love it and I can see myself wearing it often.

Brisingamen, reviewed 8-07-07
Five ambers, soft myrtle and apple blossom, myrtle, and carnation.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Brisingamen smelled absolutely gorgeous. Something about it reminded me of Euterpe -- I thought I smelled white musk but it's not listed. Unfortunately, it started to burn so I had to wash it off. But I'd definitely recommend this to anyone (without sensitive skin) looking for a pretty, feminine blend.

Carnal, reviewed 6-27-07
Bold, bright mandarin paired with the sweet, sensual earthiness of fig.

In the imp, Carnal smells like orange with a hint of fig. On my skin, all I can smell is orange candy. I like it, but I was really hoping for the fig to show as well.

Debauchery, reviewed 10-02-07
Mingled heady civet and red Egyptian musk, thickened with opium.

I tried on Debauchery before I knew the notes. On me, it smells like dragon's blood resin (which my skin chemistry turns to plumeria) and deep musk. Looking at the notes, I have no idea where the db is coming from, but I'm not complaining -- this stuff is very nice.

Delight, reviewed 5-05-07
Frangipani, with rose, tuberose, and jasmine.

I'm just getting a straight floral -- none of the four notes stand out from the others. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just not spectacular on me. However, I do think a bottle of this would be a great gift for someone who loves floral scents but hasn't discovered BPAL. I'd also suggest this to someone new to BPAL who's still overwhelmed by the choices.

Depraved, reviewed 5-28-08
Earthy black patchouli swelling with apricot.

Wet on my skin, Depraved is pretty much evenly split between the patchouli and apricot. As it dries, the patchouli grows stronger. Dry, the apricot is pretty much way in the back. This is okay, but not really me. I'll pass it on.

Desire, reviewed 10-08-07
Bittersweet neroli, black patchouli and black musk, gilded by apple, bergamot, blood red rose, teak, and vanilla.

On me, Desire smells like dragon's blood (plumeria on my skin) and patchouli. It's nice but it's really light on me.

Forbidden Fruit, reviewed 3-14-08
The fresh scent of lotus hidden behind lightly scented flowers, amber, and citrus.

On me, Forbidden Fruit is lotus flower and lemon. Since lotus morphs on me, it's actually bubblegum and lemon.

Golden Priapus, reviewed 6-12-08
Vanilla and amber with juniper, rosewood and white pine.

As I'm applying Golden Priapus, I can smell pine and rosewood. But once it's on, it's a lot of pine and a little juniper over vanilla. (I'm starting to think I amp pine.) Golden Priapus reminds me a lot of Mistletoe '07. I think it's neutral enough for women to wear, and I definitely want a bottle.

Hetairae, reviewed 9-08-08
Golden ng honey, fiery patchouli, sweet fig and clove, and a blushing touch of ylang ylang.

On me, Hetairae is honey and clove over patchouli. It's nice but not me, so I'll pass it on.

Hunger, reviewed 10-09-07
Black narcissus, orange blossoms, and vanilla.

On me, Hunger is mostly patchouli. I don't understand that, since it's not listed. It's nice I suppose but definitely not me.

La Belle au Bois Dormant, reviewed 7-08-07
Plumeria and white pear, Damascus rose, tuberose, magnolia and evening dew.

On me, La Belle au Bois Dormant is strong, wet tea rose. Once again, my skin ate everything else. While I love rose scents, I don't need another tea rose single note (I'm looking at you, Helena).

Libertine, reviewed 8-05-07
Rosewood and chamomile with bergamot, violet, red sandalwood, primrose and Arabian musk.

In the imp, Libertine smelled like ... something I can't even describe, I just know it was bad. But, I've read enough reviews to know you can't judge a scent before you try it on. Wet on my skin, the smell was the same. I decided to wait it out and was rewarded by the scent changing to musk with a hint of woods. I'm not sure if Libertine is a masculine or a neutral scent, but I do know it's not me.

Loralei, reviewed 7-07-08
Neroli, sandalwood, ylang ylang.

Wet on my skin, Loralei is neroli and ylang ylang, no sandalwood at all. As it dries, the ylang ylang vanishes. Still, this is a very pretty scent, perfect for summer.

Love's Torments, reviewed 8-18-08
White sandalwood, neroli, and vetiver.

Wet on my skin, Love's Torments is sandalwood over vetiver, pretty strong. A little neroli comes through once it's dry. While interesting, this just isn't me.

Maiden, reviewed 3-24-08
White tea, carnation and Damask Rose.

Wet on my skin, Maiden is carnation and rose over tea. Dry, the carnation is gone. This is nice but I preferred the wet stage.

Nefertiti, reviewed 7-03-07
Egyptian iris and olibanum with red and white sandalwood, soft myrrh and a breath of North African herbs.

Nefertiti on me starts off as just iris then the other notes show as it dries. It's lighter than I expected, but I do feel like there's a perfumed mist surrounding me. I like it, though I wish it was a bit stronger.

O, reviewed 2-25-08
Amber and honey with a touch of vanilla.

On me, O is mostly vanilla with some honey. I don't detect any amber at all. It's very pretty and I think it would be a good one for someone new to BPAL.

Perversion, reviewed 4-10-08
Smoky rum and black tobacco with a whisper of steamy leather with a splash of crystalline chardonnay, layered over a sensual, sweet, and deceptively magnetic base of tonka.

I'm a little amazed by Perversion -- it's a blend of more than three notes where I can actually smell every note that's listed, instead of my skin eating half of them. And it smells pretty good on me. I'm getting rum and chardonnay the most (booze loves my skin), but the tobacco, leather, and tonka are there too, in the back. It's neutral, bordering on masculine, but not so much that a woman can't wear it.

Queen of Sheba, reviewed 4-04-08
Her scent is a bounty of golden honeyed almonds and a whisper of African and Middle Eastern spices.

I love the way Queen of Sheba smells. Honey, almonds, and spice, so good. Unfortunately, it burned, so someone else can enjoy it.

Rapture, reviewed 4-11-08
Moroccan rose, Sumatran rose, mandarin, Egyptian myrrh, night-blooming jasmine, bergamot and neroli thrust into Arabian musk.

On me, Rapture is rose, jasmine, and a little neroli. It's pretty but I was expecting more. Maybe age will improve it.

Salomé, reviewed 4-09-08
Almond with star jasmine, oakmoss, red sandalwood and Egyptian musk.

Wet on my skin, Salomé is sandalwood single note. Dry, the sandalwood is replaced by jasmine over a little musk. This is lovely.

Saturnalia, reviewed 6-11-07
Violet deepened with vetiver.

Wet, Saturnalia's musty, earthy and green, like just the leaves of the violet and no flowers at all. I guess that's the vetiver. After it's dry a while, the vetiver takes a back seat and the violets come through. Compared to Faith, Saturnalia is definitely darker and deeper violets. I like it a lot, though I like Faith a little better.

"Io (prounounced "yo") Saturnalia!" is how the Romans said, "Happy Saturnalia!" It's one of the few phrases I remember from my three years of high school Latin. (It's how we said, "Merry Christmas," since the two holidays are very close to each other on the calendar.) So, even if I didn't like Saturnalia, I'd keep at least an imp around just to remind me of Latin class.

Sed Non Satiata, reviewed 4-19-07
Myrrh, red patchouli, cognac, honey, and tuberose and geranium in a breathy, panting veil over the darkest body musk.

(The name means "Insatiable Lust." It was inspired by a French poem of the same name.)

Sed Non Satiata is pure musk from the time I open the imp to several minutes after it dries, then there's a hint of geranium. It's a very sensual scent, perfect for a hot date.

Seraglio, reviewed 9-09-07
Sweet almond and Mysor sandalwood enveloped by a heady veil of Bulgarian Rose, neroli, nutmeg, clove and orange peel.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Seraglio is a spicy rose. But then my skin chemistry kicks in and it becomes a spicy rose soap. Oh well, better luck next time.

Siren, reviewed 4-20-12
White ginger, jasmine, and a touch of vanilla and apricot.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Siren is just ginger. Drying, it's jasmine, vanilla, and ginger, in roughly that order. I don't get any apricot at all. Still, this is pretty and a good start for someone who's new to BPAL.

Snake Oil, reviewed 5-23-08
A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla.

On me, Snake Oil seems to be sandalwood and vanilla, with the vanilla getting stronger as it dries. Unfortunately, it started to burn, so someone else can have this.

Spellbound, reviewed 3-26-08
Three roses, radiant amber, and sensual red musk.

On me, Spellbound is roses and amber, no musk. Up close, the roses smell fine, but the waft is a little soapy around the edges. This is nice but not what I was hoping for. I'll age it and see if it improves.

Vixen, reviewed 8-12-08
The innocence of orange blossom tainted by the beguiling scents of ginger and patchouli.

On me, Vixen is mostly patchouli, with the other two notes in the background. Unfortunately, I keep getting whiffs of coldsore medicine (the same thing happened with Egg Nog) so I'll have to pass this on.

~

Wanton, reviewed 8-15-07
Palmarosa, red sandalwood, attar of rose, patchouli.

I don't know why, but Wanton wet smells an awful lot like R'lyeh, which I definitely don't like. But just as Wanton was starting to smell more distinctive, it also started to burn, so I had to wash it off. I'll pass this on to someone else.

Whip, reviewed 4-07-08
Agony and ecstasy: black leather and damp red rose.

On me, Whip is just the damp red rose. The leather isn't showing at all. I'm hoping age will bring it out.
