Carnaval Diabolique

Carnaval Diabolique

Act I: The Prologue
Carnaval Diabolique, reviewed 2-24-08
Opium smoke, lemon flower, heliotrope, tuberose, black musk, vanilla, coconut, apricot flower.

Wet on my skin, Carnaval Diabolique is lemon flower, opium smoke, black musk, and coconut. Very nice. Unfortunately, it's just lemon before it even dries. Someone else can have this.

The Phantom Calliope, reviewed 3-03-08
Black cherry, patchouli, cassis, cardamom and verbena.

Wet on my skin, The Phantom Calliope is black cherry and patchouli. They don't smell well together on me. Dry, it starts to burn so I had to wash it off.

Act II: Fiat Nox
Antonino, The Carny Talker, reviewed 2-22-08
White musk, wild plum, vetiver, black coconut, verbena, fig, and lavender.

Wet on my skin, Antonino is lemon and coconut over musk. That quickly changes to just lemon. Someone with more compatible skin chemistry can enjoy this.

Doc Constantine, reviewed 12-06-07
Sheer musk, cedar smoke, fir needle, black amber and leather.

On me, Doc Constantine is fir and cedar over musk with a little bit of leather. It's neutral bordering on masculine. I love it and I'll be sure to stock up before the Carnaval leaves.

Gennivre, L'Artiste du Diable, reviewed 2-20-08
Hyson tea leaf, pale mint, sugar cane, orange blossom, lemongrass, and honey.

On me, Gennivre is simply sweet orange tea. It's nice but I'm not sure if it's a keeper. I'll have to try it again later before I decide.

Melisande, the Puppet Mistress, reviewed 1-30-08
Jasmine sambac, dark musk, violet water, vanilla bean and mimosa.

On me, Melisande is bold jasmine and shy violet. I love her -- she's so feminine and pretty. I plan on stocking up and recommending her to a few friends.

Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller, reviewed 1-29-08
Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum.

On me, Mme. Moriarty is a lot of patchouli, some musk, and a hint of vanilla. It's very sexy but not really me. Someone else can enjoy this.

Pulcinella & Teresina, reviewed 2-02-08
Labdanum, cedar, teak and red rose.
Wet on my skin, Pulcinella & Teresina is cedar and rose, like a rose bouquet next to an open cedar chest. As it dries, the teak comes through as well. A couple of hours later, the rose is gone and just the woods remain. I love this, I just wish the rose lasted longer.

Theodosius, The Legerdemain, reviewed 2-27-08
Earl Grey tea leaves, a white fougere, jasmine leaf, pearlescent white musk, and vanilla bean.

On me, Theodosius is tea, vanilla, and white musk. It's very nice, I only wish it were stronger.

Xanthe, the Weeping Clown, reviewed 2-29-08
Guava, orange peel, white pepper, spun sugar and apple blossom.

On me, Xanthe is just powdered sugar-slathered bubble gum. Not a bad scent, but not what I'm looking for.

Act III: The 13-in-1
Eshe, A Vision of Life-in-Death, reviewed 6-18-07
Embalming herbs, black myrrh, white sandalwood, black orchid, paperwhites, tomb dust, and Moroccan jasmine.

I love Ancient Egypt, so I probably would've bought Eshe no matter what the notes were. In the bottle, I get straight herbal. Wet on my skin, there's a whiff of dust, but after that, Eshe is just floral. In fact, on me it smells almost exactly like Poisson d'Avril (they're even the same color), though from what I can tell, they have no notes in common. Don't get me wrong, I love Poisson d'Avril, but I don't really need two bottles of it. I'm hoping that aging this will bring out more of Eshe's notes.

Faith, the Siamese Twin, reviewed 6-02-07
Simplicity and innocence, gleefully despoiled! Hope is sugared rose, Faith is sugared violet.

In the bottle: First sniff, pure violets. Second sniff, vanilla sugar. On my skin: This must be what candied violets are like. I think I'm in love! Faith is definitely for floral lovers of any age. It's soft, sweet, and so, so feminine. I'll be sorry when Faith leaves town with the Carnaval, but until then, this is going to be a whirlwind love affair.

Faiza, the Black Mamba, reviewed 6-02-08
A sensual blend of twisting, exotic, serpentine oils: black amber, caraway, oakmoss, green sandalwood, bergamot, jasmine sambac, gardenia, orange pulp, vanilla, blackberry, black musk, white honey, ti leaf, and ginger.

On me, Faiza is jasmine, gardenia, and orange pulp. It's very light and feminine, perfect for summer. I may need another bottle of this.

Hope, the Siamese Twin, reviewed 6-04-07
Simplicity and innocence, gleefully despoiled! Hope is sugared rose, Faith is sugared violet.

In the bottle: First sniff, roses and sugar. Second sniff, vanilla sugar. Wet on my skin: Strong, slightly green roses, vanilla sugar, and a hint of floral soap. Dry on my skin: Roses dusted with powdered sugar. She's a little too sweet for me, so I'll give her up.

Isaac, the Living Skeleton, reviewed 8-07-08
Bourbon, tobacco, dry bone, bay rum aftershave, and sleazy cologne.

On me, Isaac is caramel and booze (I'm not sure if that's the rum or the bourbon) and cologne. It's sleezy but still a little sexy. I suspect it'll age beautifully.

Meskhenet, The Vulture Maiden, reviewed 7-05-07
Frankincense, hyssop, hibiscus, river reeds, orris root, palm frond, and olibanum.

On my skin, Meskhenet started out as floral with a hint of green. Drying, there's a definite wood smell. Sandalwood, maybe? I think she's fading, which is a pity since she smells so good. I hope aging will make her stronger.

Thalassa the Galapagos Mermaid, reviewed 8-13-07
Seaweed, kelp, salty ocean spray, bitter almond, night-blooming jasmine, frankincense, and benzoin.

All I get from Thalassa is the salty ocean spray. It's a nice smell, don't get me wrong, but I was hoping for more than that. I'll pass this one on and stick with Selkie.

Zarita the Doll Girl, reviewed 7-30-07
White carnation, iris, orange blossom, and sugared cream.

In the bottle and wet on my skin, Zarita smelled like a spiced orange. Unfortunately, she started to burn so I had to wash her off.

The Snake Pit
Boomslang, reviewed 5-28-07
Snake Oil with cocoa, teakwood, and rice milk.

In the bottle, Boomslang is spiced chocolate. The consistency is like thin Hershey's syrup (just like the newest 13). On my skin, it was still spiced chocolate and very yummy. Unfortunately, it started to burn, so I had to wash it off. I'm sure it'll make someone else happy.

Coral Snake, reviewed 5-23-07
Snake Oil with blood orange, red apple, lemon peel, plumeria, and gardenia.

In the bottle: Mostly apple, a little bit of flowers, and maybe some spices. Very nice! On my skin: The same. I've never tried Snake Oil on its own or any of the SO blends before. Unfortunately for me, there must be clove and/or cinnamon in it, since Coral Snake really irritated my skin. It's a real shame, since it smelled so good in the bottle. Oh well, I should be able to enable someone good and proper with this. *eg*

Cottonmouth, reviewed 1-31-08
Snake Oil with linden blossom, calla lily, passion flower, and narcissus.

In the bottle and wet on my skin, Cottonmouth is light, white florals over spice. Dry, the florals remain but the spice is barely there. It's very pretty and feminine.

King Cobra, reviewed 7-04-07
Snake Oil with orris, frankincense, and copal.

Wearing King Cobra, I get an image of a cobra slithering on the stone floor of a temple after dark, with burning incense and an offering of flowers on a nearby altar. On me, this Snake Pit denizen has bite, but only slight compared to Boomslang and Coral Snake. If I didn't put on my usual amount (close to slathering), it probably wouldn't burn at all. This one's definitely a keeper.

Act IV: The Interlude
The Torture Queen, reviewed 8-22-08
White amber, vanilla musk, white tea, ambergris, gardenia, and chrome.

Wet on my skin, The Torture Queen is vanilla musk, white tea, gardenia, and a hint of ozone. That must be the chrome, since metallic notes tend to be ozone on me. Dry, the gardenia starts to take over. This is a very feminine blend that's perfect for warm-weather months.

The Grindhouse
Daiyu, reviewed 9-02-08
Moroccan jasmine, chrysanthemum, tea leaf, white musk, and acai berry.

In the bottle and wet on my skin, Daiyu is straight acai berry. Dry, the other notes start to come through, with chrysanthemum being the most prominent. This is very nice.

Dionysia, reviewed 9-03-08
Wild plum, pomegranate, raspberry, Siamese benzoin, plum blossom, patchouli, frankincense, and mahogany.

In the bottle and wet on my skin, Dionysia is raspberry, pomegranate, and plum. Dry, the frankincense and mahogany push the fruits to the background. This is gorgeous, I only wish the fruits were stronger.

Parthenope, reviewed 8-29-08
Honeysuckle, orris, moss, musk, benzoin, oakmoss, and star jasmine.

Wet on my skin, Parthenope is honeysuckle and jasmine over musk. Dry, moss starts to come through as well. Something about it reminds me of Euterpe. This is gorgeous!
