Ars Moriendi

Ars Moriendi
Dance of Death, reviewed 9-10-07
Dry, bone-white orris, black musk, serpentine patchouli and our murkiest myrrh.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Dance of Death smelled like hazelnuts. Yeah, no idea where that came from. Now I think I'm getting the musk and myrrh over patchouli. This one really seems to like my skin. But it likes me more than I like it. Still, I'll keep it around.

Darkness, reviewed 8-16-07
Blackest opium and narcissus deepened by myrrh.

Darkness is gorgeous on me. I think I'm getting a lot of narcissus and some myrrh. I wouldn't recognize opium if I smelled it, but this scent is definitely heady. Sophisticated too -- this would be a good recommendation for someone new to BPAL. On me though, Darkness doesn't live up to it's name. It's too bright and warm for that. But I like it just the same.

Deep in Earth, reviewed 6-12-08
Rose geranium, Spanish moss, Irish yew, and graveyard dirt.

In the imp, Deep in Earth reminds me of Destroying Angel -- a decomposing plant smell. I guess that's the moss. On my skin, it's rose geranium (which to me is like rose, but slightly different) and mostly dirt, but the moss is still there. I like this a lot more than I thought I would.

Eternal, reviewed 3-18-08
Stephanotis, cyclamen, heliotrope, white rose and gardenia.

On me, Eternal is light, white flowers. No individual note really stands out, but that's not a bad thing. It's very pretty and a good way to introduce someone to BPAL.

The Ghost, reviewed 7-21-08
White iris, osmanthus, calla lily, tomb-crawling ivy and a coffin spray of gladiolus, lisianthus and delphinium.

On me, The Ghost is a clean (though not soapy) floral. I think the delphinium is the strongest. This one's definitely a keeper.

House of Night, reviewed 9-25-08
A sorrowful graveyard bouquet of somber blooms, funereal boughs, dismal green and laden with grief.

On me, House of Night is just a really light floral. I think there might be lily and violet in here somewhere. Maybe age will strengthen it.

Jazz Funeral, reviewed 12-23-07
Bittersweet bay rum, bourbon, and a host of funeral flowers with a touch of graveyard dirt, magnolia and Spanish Moss.

All I get from Jazz Funeral is grave dirt over a little booze, but I like it. It reminds me a lot of Destroying Angel. I don't think I'll get a bottle but I will keep this around.

Les Fleurs du Mal, reviewed 5-30-08
Features a rose base, softened with lilac and wisteria.

Les Fleurs du Mal seems to be just wisteria and rose on me, no lilac. Not that I'm complaining -- this is a perfect spring and summer scent, so feminine and pretty. I may need a bottle of this.

Nocturne, reviewed 8-24-08
Deepest violet touched with lilac and tuberose.

On me, Nocturne is heavy on the lilacs with slightly powdery violet in the background. It's lovely and a definite keeper.

The Phantom Wooer, reviewed 8-05-08
A lifeless love song: stargazer lily, bone dust, tomb mosses, buttonweed, moonflower, and honey myrtle.

Wet on my skin, The Phantom Wooer started out as a clean floral. As it dried, the honey myrtle and tomb mosses took over. This is interesting but not me.

The Reaper and the Flowers, reviewed 10-12-07
Longiflorum lilies, white rose, chrysanthemum, and carnation.

The Reaper and the Flowers is like Poisson d'Avril's younger sister. While Pd'A is strong yellow flowers, The Reaper and the Flowers is all light white flowers. I like it but I don't really need a bottle.

Thanatopsis, reviewed 1-09-08
A deep, solemn earthen scent containing pine, juniper and musk.

Wet on my skin, Thanatopsis is pine, a little juniper, myrrh, and musk. Dry, the myrrh is gone and the juniper is barely there, but the pine and musk go very well together. This is a neutral scent and very sexy. I may need a bottle of this.

Twilight, reviewed 9-11-07
Lavender and jasmine, with a touch of glowing honeysuckle.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Twilight is all lavender. It's very medicinal smelling. Dry, all I get is honeysuckle, not that I'm complaining. I don't think the jasmine is showing at all. It's a nice scent, definitely more for spring and summer. I'll keep it but I won't get a bottle.
