Watched my Pirates DVD yesterday...

... And it has me thinking. Could information from the deleted scenes of a movie still be considered canon?

In one of the deleted scenes, Elizabeth calls Commodore Norrington by his first name -- James. Now, that scene never made it to the movie, so is Commodore James Norrington his canon name? Or is his canon name just Commodore Norrington, and since his first name was never mentioned, can anyone make up their own fanon name for him?

I guess what I'm really wondering here is what constitutes canon when it comes to movies? Is it just the version of the movie that was released in theaters? In that case, then the good Commodore doesn't have a canonical first name. But if movie canon is the movie that was released in theaters plus any deleted or extended scenes, then his canonical name is Commodore James Norrington.

Thoughts?
