Bewitching Brews
Anne Bonny, reviewed 10-23-07
A blend of Indonesian red patchouli, red sandalwood, and frankincense.

What I get from Anne Bonny is mostly sandalwood with a little patchouli. I like it but it's not me so I don't need a bottle.

Aureus, reviewed 8-18-07
True, perfect golden light, refined into an incomparably glorious scent.

On me, Aureus smells like almonds and incense resins. It's like a less-complex Cleopatra Testing Poisons. I like it but I don't need a bottle of this.

Bewitched, reviewed 5-08-07
Blackberry, sage, green tea, wild berries and dark musk.

In the imp, Bewitched smells like woods and berries, but on my skin, it's just berries. It's like a sweeter Baneberry. I like it but I don't think I'll get a bottle of this.

Black Forest, reviewed 1-11-08
Thick, viscous pine with ambergris, black musk, juniper and cypress.

On me, Black Forest is pine SN. I love pine, don't get me wrong, but I expected more from this. I'll keep it for now.

Black Pearl, reviewed 11-05-07
Coconut, Florentine iris, hazelnut and opalescent white musk.

On me, Black Pearl is sweet coconut and iris. Unfortunately, it didn't even last an hour before fading to almost nothing. I'll age this and see if it lasts longer.

The Black Tower, reviewed 3-27-08
White sandalwood, ambergris, wet ozone, galbanum, leather, ebony, teak, burnt grasses, English ivy, red wine.

Wet on my skin, I get red wine wafting from my neck, but on my wrist, it smells like tobacco, which I know isn't listed. Dry, The Black Tower is wine, tobacco, maybe some leather, and woods. It's very masculine on me, but I love it.

Bliss, reviewed 4-09-07
Pure milk chocolate.

In the imp: Brownie batter. On my skin: Bliss wavers between brownies and Count Chocula cereal. Not that I'm complaining.

Blood, reviewed 5-07-07
Essence of dragon’s blood resin, thickened with myrrh and cherry, with a trickle of clove.

A little sweet, a little bloody, Blood embodies every sense of the word "sanguine." I'm just not sure if it's me. I'll have to wear it more then decide.

Burial, reviewed 7-25-07
The Dark Side of Earth: deep, brooding forest scents, including juniper and patchouli. The scent of upturned cemetery loam mingling with floral offerings to the dead.

Wet on my skin, Burial smells like a bit of dirt and a lot of Lemon Pledge. Dry, the Lemon Pledge seems to have calmed down a lot -- the two scents are blending together. It's pleasant enough now, but not really me. I'll try this scent again sometime to see if the Lemon Pledge is still there. If it is, I'll have to bid Burial goodbye.

Calico Jack, reviewed 11-06-07
Sea air, driftwood, waterlogged kelp, and the memory of plundered spices sprayed over worn leathers, rough musk, and the salty wooden floorboards of the Revenge.

On me, Calico Jack is a salty, aquatic men's cologne. It's a good, masculine complement to Mary Read. Still, I think it's neutral enough for a woman to wear. I may need a bottle of this.

Chimera, reviewed 9-13-07
The fiery, volatile scent of cinnamon, thickened by myrrh, honeysuckle, and copal.

In the imp and wet on my skin, Chimera is a cinnamon floral. But it started to irritate so I had to wash it off. I'm sure someone else will love it.

Dee, reviewed 8-23-07
His scent is soft English leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods.

What I get from Dee is mostly the woods and a little incense. I think the leather's back there too. This is gorgeous and while definitely a masculine scent, it is a scent women can wear as well. Dee's going right on my wishlist.

Delirium, reviewed 9-29-07
Contains apple, rose, and lemon.

In the imp, Delirium is apple and rose. It smelled a lot like Eve, actually. On my skin, it's rose and lemon. It's light and pretty, perfect for summer. I'd say Delirium's a cousin of Eve and Persephone. It's appropriate for all ages.

Eclipse, reviewed 8-20-07
A delicious blend of bitter almond, vanilla, frankincense and heliotrope, with a drop of cinnamon.

Unfortunately, all I could get from Eclipse was a little bit of floral before the cinnamon started to irritate my skin. One more for the "do not keep" pile.

Event Horizon, reviewed 10-17-08
Black opium, labdanum, opoponax, black orchid, and benzoin.

Wet on my skin, Event Horizon is the opium, orchid, and benzoin. Kinda light and hazy. As it dries, what I'm guessing is the labdanum and opoponax come through. It's very pretty, though not as dark as I expected.

~

Fae, reviewed 6-17-07
White musk, bergamot, heliotrope, peach and oakmoss.

Fae is gorgeous! On me, it's mostly peach with a little bit of citrus, a little bit of musk, and a hint of floral in the beginning. It's a good scent and one I think even non-BPAL fans would like.

Grog, reviewed 11-04-07
This be the scent of pirate rum!

Grog started out smelling like caramel then it soon changed to butterscotch and booze. It's nice but I had to wash it off when it started to burn. Oh well.

Incantation, reviewed 7-20-07
Vetiver, dark woods, crumbling and burnt black sandalwood and a drop of lemon rind.

I couldn't remember what Incantation's notes were when I put it on, but I knew immediately that I knew the scent but couldn't place it. Now that I can see the notes, I know I'm getting vetiver, woods, and a little bit of lemon. It is absolutely gorgeous, definitely a new favorite, and a bottle buy as soon as humanly possible.

Inferno, reviewed 12-24-07
The Dark Side of Fire: cinnamon, bitter almond, and neroli. Heavily spiced, torrid, and possibly conflagrant.

To me, Inferno smells like Big Red gum. Predictably, it burned my skin so I had to wash it off, but I'm glad the Lab sent me the frimp. Someone else can enjoy this.

Intrigue, reviewed 6-08-07
Black palm, with cocoa, fig and shadowy wooded notes.

I don't get a sense of darkness and secrets from Intrigue, unless the secret is someone's drinking hot cocoa in Strangler Fig's fig orchard. In the imp and wet on my skin, Intrigue is autumn leaves and woods. Since autumn leaves aren't listed, maybe that's the black palm. Dry, Intrigue smells a lot like Strangler Fig, except less fig and a hint of cocoa.

Jack, reviewed 11-03-07
Pumpkin, spiced with nutmeg, glowing peach and murky clove.

Wet, Jack is pumpkin spice cake. Dry, he somehow changes to spiced apple. I still love it, though. I won't wear this one year-round, but it's perfect for the cooler months. After a couple of hours, Jack went back to smelling like spiced pumpkin. I may need a bottle of this.

The Jersey Devil, reviewed 1-07-08
Pitch pine with blackberry leaf, cranberry, cedar wood and tomato leaf.

In the imp and wet on my skin, The Jersey Devil is cranberry juice and cedar. Dry, the cedar is almost gone but the pine has arrived. I love this but I don't need a bottle.

Jolly Roger, reviewed 11-07-07
Sea spray with an undercurrent of leather, Bay Rum, and salty, dry woods.

On me, Jolly Roger is salty ocean air with maybe a hint of rum. Once again, my skin ate the other notes. This is nice but not a favorite.

Juke Joint, reviewed 1-17-08
A bawdy, gleefully wicked and unruly scent: Kentucky Bourbon, sugar and a sprig of mint.

On me, Juke Joint is a light and airy mint over burbon. The two go very well together. It smells closer to perfume than like I spilled a mint julep on myself. I like it a lot but I don't need a bottle.

~

Kill-Devil, reviewed 1-16-08
Sugar cane, molasses, oak wood, and honey.

On me, Kill-Devil is just honey. Strong, sweet honey. I was hoping the oak would show too, but no luck. I'll age this a bit and see what happens.

La Bella Donna Della Mia Mente, reviewed 7-07-07
Soft, lush myrtle and dry, sweet melilot with wild rose, pomegranate juice and peach blossom against a background of deep aquatic notes and a twirl of melancholy autumn breezes.

In the imp, La Bella Donna Della Mia Mente smells like peach and something else, maybe the melilot and myrtle. Wet on my skin, I smelled apple and rose. Where the apple came from, I have no idea. Drying, the apple smell was replaced by peach and pomegranate, with the rose as a base. Dry, the aquatics make the fruits juicy and the rose dewy. I like it. It can't top Persephone, but it's a nice alternative.

Lampades, reviewed 5-05-08
Their scent is the crisp, inviting bittersweet tang of cranberry with smoky dark lilies, heady, sensual musk, a tingle of ginger and a brush of Mediterranean spices.

On me, Lampades is just cranberry. There was a hint of something else, so I think aging will help.

Magus, reviewed 7-23-07
Galangal, high john essence, frankincense, cedar, and sandalwood.

Mary Read, reviewed 10-24-07
Salt air, ocean mist, aged patchouli, sarsaparilla, watered-down rum, leather-tinged musk, and a spray of gunpowder.

On me, Mary Read just smells of salt air. I don't smell any of the other notes at all, but don't think that I'm complaining. This would be perfect for summer.

~

Masquerade, reviewed 10-08-08
Patchouli, ambergris, carnation and orange blossom.

On me, Masquerade is a lot of orange and some carnation over patchouli. It's a lot nicer than I thought it would be.

Mata Hari, reviewed 3-01-08
Five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean.

On me, Mata Hari is a strong, deep floral. I thought it was plumeria at first, then when it dried I realized it's jasmine. I don't detect any of the other notes, which is a real pity. Here's hoping aging will help.

Ode on Melancholy, reviewed 9-30-07
Lavender and wisteria, heart-wrenching pale rose, desolate white sandalwood and thin, tear-streaked white musk.

On me, Ode on Melancholy smells like white florals over white musk. It's definitely a sister to Euterpe and a pretty summer scent. I like this one and I'll definitely keep it around.

~

Omen, reviewed 5-27-08
Deep, mysterious, and full of dark portents: oakmoss, juniper berry, myrrh and patchouli.

Wet on my skin, Omen is juniper berry over myrrh and patchouli. As it dries, something turns soapy, and I suspect it's the juniper berry. Dry, it settles down again. This very nice, but not exactly me. Still, I'll keep it around.

Ozymandias, reviewed 6-29-07
Dry desert air, dry and hot, passing over crumbling stone megaliths and plundered golden monuments, bearing a hint of the incense of lost Gods on its winds.

Ozymandias is absolutely gorgeous! I can see the comparison to Chanel No. 5 and I get the sense of ruins in the desert. Only Beth could make something a blend like this possible. I've just found a new favorite.

Plunder, reviewed 11-08-07
Tea leaf, cassia, cinnamon bark, clove, allspice, sandalwood, tobacco, peppercorn, and nutmeg.

On me, Plunder is cinnamon tea, with more cinnamon than tea. Unfortunately and predictably, the cinnamon irritates my skin so I had to wash it off. I can easily see this as a room scent.

Poisoned Apple, reviewed 5-23-08
A perfect, lovely, gleaming red apple whose sweetness masks a swirl of narcotic opium, oleander, and hemlock.

On me, Poisoned Apple is mostly juicy apple with a hint of something else. It's very nice, but I think this one needs to age a bit before I wear it again.

The Raven, reviewed 4-19-08
Violet and neroli mingled with iris, white sandalwood and dark musk.

Wet on my skin, The Raven is violet with a hint of sandalwood. Dry, it's just violet. While I love violet, I think I'll let The Raven age and see if the other notes come out.

Scarecrow, reviewed 4-26-08
The scent of a hot wind blowing through desolate, scorched, barren fields.

Wet on my skin, Scarecrow is a warm, green, dusty scent. How something could be both green and dusty, I don't know, but it is. Dry, it's still warm but it's more of a men's cologne. But I'm definitely not complaining.

Schrodinger's Cat, reviewed 5-16-08
A paradoxical scent experiment! - tangerine, sugared lime, pink grapefruit, oakmoss, lavender, zdravetz, and chocolate peppermint.

On me, Schrodinger's Cat is just the tangerine and sugared lime. It's very fresh and light, perfect for summer. I'll try aging this to see if the other notes come out, but it's good the way it is.

Tushnamatay, reviewed 6-12-07
Pure internal harmony and spiritual bliss: the perfected meditation blend.

To me, Tushnamatay is wood and floral, but it's so light that it's hard to be sure. It's pretty, though, but definitely not me -- I want a scent with real presence. I think I'll pass this on to someone else.

Ulalume, reviewed 5-22-07
Starry white lilies lend an eerie brightness to the deep black wooded scents of cypress and oak, layered with a touch of crushed dried leaves and the faintest aquatic note.

In the imp: leaves, woods, and lilies. Wet on my skin: Hooboy, this stuff is pure autumn leaves. It's strong and very earthy, reminding me of Destroying Angel. Drying: Leaves and lilies. Dry: Lilies with the barest hint of leaves. It's now a lot weaker -- I have to hold my wrist up to my nose to smell it at all. I never smell woods on my skin, which is a little disappointing. I'm hoping the lilies will get stronger if I age this. Otherwise, I don't see myself buying a bottle of this.

Ultraviolet, reviewed 1-06-08
Lush violet and neroli spiked hard with eucalyptus and a sliver of mint.

In the imp, Ultraviolet is violet, eucalyptus, and a little neroli. Wet on my skin, it's violet with some eucalyptus. Dry, just violet. I like this a lot but I don't need a bottle.

Velvet, reviewed 5-30-08
Envelop yourself in the soft, sensual embrace of gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh.

Voodoo, reviewed 9-09-08
Myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove.

Wilde, reviewed 10-11-07
A sophisticated traditional gentleman’s cologne, with just the slightest taint of patchouli’s passion, tonka bean’s decadence, the philanthropy of bergamot, moss’ cynicism, the sharp wit of lavender, and the hopeless romantic longing of jasmine and thyme.

On me, Wilde is lavender, thyme, and a hint of bergamot over an aquatic men's cologne base. I am completely in love with this scent. It's masculine but not so much that a woman can't wear it. This is definitely going on my wishlist.

Yggdrasil, reviewed 4-28-08
The World Ash. Nine woods, nine leaves, and three herbs each for Ratatosk and Vidofnir, with three final herbs to placate Nidhogg.

Wet on my skin, Yggdrasil is a green, herbal smell. Dry, I get pine with maybe another wood behind it. Unfortunately, Yggdrasil's so light that it's hard to tell what I'm smelling -- I'm only getting the occasional light whiff. I think I'll pass this one on.

Zephyr, reviewed 9-10-08
Lemon, lemon verbena, neroli, white musk, white florals, white sandalwood, China musk, bergamot and a drop of vanilla.
